Herculaneum Guided Experience

If you are visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum is the perfect way to complete your understanding of the Roman world. And if you only have time for one site, Herculaneum alone is an excellent choice.

It is smaller than Pompeii, but what makes it truly special is its state of preservation. You are not just walking through ruins, but through houses that still feel incredibly alive.

Here, you can see details that are almost unimaginable elsewhere. Original wooden doors, carbonised by the eruption and frozen in time, still stand in place. In some houses, you will also find pieces of furniture that are nearly 2,000 years old, still inside the rooms where they were once used. You will also see beautifully preserved homes with ancient painted ceilings, frescoes, and domestic spaces that make everyday life very easy to picture.

The difference with Pompeii is quite striking. Pompeii is much larger and gives you the feeling of an entire ancient city, where you really understand its scale, its complexity, and how everything was connected. Herculaneum, on the other hand, feels like stepping into a single moment of life that has been preserved almost intact. Everything feels closer, more complete, and more immediate.

This is why it is especially recommended for families and young explorers. It is easier to read, easier to imagine, and it brings Roman life very close in a very natural way.

Herculaneum does not replace Pompeii. It completes it, offering a different and even more intimate perspective on the same world.

So whether as an addition to Pompeii or as a standalone visit, it remains one of the most fascinating places to truly understand how people lived in ancient Rome.
